The beginnings of the commercial Scallop industry in Tasmania was around 1920.Such was the success of this new found enterprise that by 1939 there were 27 boats engaged in this fishing endeavour.
Tasmanian Scallops are regarded as some of the finest in the world and rightly so.
Numbers of boats engaged in the industry vary with regulation and conditions as professional battle not only the elements.
Scallop boats in Tasmania and Victoria were numbered around 300 in more modern times. That number fell to around one tenth of that.
The catch is around 40000 tonnes with the fishery recovering from a suspected algae bloom.Scallop splitters arent easy to come by either with a good shucker able to process around 9-10 kilos an hour.
I'm pleased to hear that after one local devotee confessed to consuming between 3 and 4 dozen a day.
