Esperance Fishing Reports

Well guys the weather gods were with us yesterday while most of "u" guys were at work Steve Ward and myself went chasing pink snapper, the first lump did not fire even though we had both at separate times got the goods at this spot we did not even get a smell, the second spot was one of steves he had visited a day or so before and got some swallowtail nannagai's off of but all we got was one queen snapper by myself of approx 2-3 kgs.

We then went out further as the wind had died down and tried dougies    and i came up trumps with a small pinkie of about 5 kgs, steve got a nanny of about 1 kg to open the score.
steve said lets go out a bit further and we ended up on lump west of town aways and on the forst drop steve got a nice nanny of 2 kgs then i got a pinky of about 10 kgs and it was on for the next couple of short drifts, i bagged out on pinkies and also ended up with a couple of queenies to boot, steve got 3 nice pinkies and the nannys of which i could not get sniff.

All in all a great day with a top bloke to go fishing with :D
i am attaching some pics and then am off down to the 9 mile to have a go at some salmon as i heard there is a school trapped in the lagoon.

Hey Russ!

Just got back from my trip last night. Logged in this morning and saw your post. Great that you went fishing with Steve :D and got some nice pinkies and good photos too! 8)

I've got a heap of stuff to catch up on around here (including getting a job) but will make a small post soon about my trip - have a ton of photos and some really excellent video! Will put more stuff up as soon as I get a chance...

Cheers

Hi Russ
Well am back at work, i just checked the site and saw the post you put in, defianatly was a good day out. i went back a couple more times and got another 8 pinkies, the last trip i did there were alot of skippy around the 2 Kg 's on the lump , so took a few home to smoke up.
After coming around and looking at your shed i finaly came up with a good idea for my fishing gear, as the weathe r was lousy most of the time i got stuck into building the shelves and work bench in the shed.
all that is left is to put int he air compressor and run hoses for it then i am done, has come up realy good

Welcome Pup!

I suggest that you post a report of your trip this weekend
If you don't have much luck maybe Rusty or Wardie will take pity on you and throw some tips your way...

I fished with Rusty many times, many years ago... He's not that good really  so if he can catch fish down there anybody can...

If I was there I'd grab a chart and study some of the offshore lumps and drop-offs as starters

p.s.

We'd also like to see your boat and tow in vehicle in the Fishing Boats Section!!!

Catching Fish in Esperance

Post by Steve Ward » Thu Aug 14, 2008 7:26 am

Catching Fish in Esperance

Hi Pup,

Catching fish in Esperance is pretty easy , there is a abundance of fish varities around to catch , from sand whiting to sambo's

I am not sure what type of plotter, sounder you have , but a good sounder is the key and learn how it works properly

I have recentlly brought the new nav man 8120 and am still playing around with it.

You need to get your hands on a few charts and look at them they are realy handy, i have a garmin one on my laptop which is realy good, so i can study it while i am away over here at work.

The best way is to steam around the islands as a start and sig sag out from them and you will find good lumps. most people go for the big drop offs , but a lot of the fish are ont he lumps that only rise 1-2 metres

I just checked the local weather and it looks good for the weekend so you should have a good day out.

Send some photos of your boat etc, having a 6 metre you can easily access the outer islands, my boat is 6.2 and i have no problems going 30-40 miles out

G'day Wardie,

Thanks for the advice mate! Im at work now checking weather and getting keener by the minute!!!! We have a pretty good chart plotter and colour sounder combo, it's a navman 8084 ( just not that good at reading it ) i was thinking of heading out to figure of 8 as i've heard it is a good spot to fish? Do you think im heading in the right direction? Cheers for the help.

Pup.
