Bikes in the USA

Post by Bob Fisher » Fri May 07, 2010 3:47 am

Hey Russ, I took some one-handed pics of bikes for you while I was driving along. Best I could do while they're coming straight at me!

Great

Great stuff Bob.

Bro in law & me screw with buying, fixing, rebuilding, riding then and selling M/bikes for "fun / hobby".

We had 6 at last count... (couple small quads, Yamaha 1200, Suzuki gsx750, Honda XLV 750, Honda Cb500 offroad, a Honda cbr929 rr Fireblade, etc.

Sold the fireblade a month or two back and the Suzukis now done and ready to go as well.

At one point I was all set to start importing bikes form the USA, and sell them here.

Indians, and Goldwings mainly.....

They sell here for double what they do stateside so theres a good upside profit potential minus shipping ($2K Florida - Fremantle) dutys and GST etc (5% duty & 10% GST cumulative on cost & shipping combined).

But I learned a lesson the hard way abut foreign trade between US and Oz in recent days....

Its the 2nd lads 21st Bday this weekend - and he plays guitar - so we bought a new Gibson Les Paul Custom off evilbay because of the "savings"? by buying it stateside and posting it compared to buying here.

Well after buying (and before the international transaction between banks & pay pal etc) the Aussie $ tanked a few cents in just 2 days, after Krudd announced some 40% mining royalties tax thing and the markets went into melt down.

Turns out after the exchange rate change and dutys postage insurance GSt & duty etc are all paid ti will cost the same as buying it here - the $2K saving just evaporated in 48 hours...

If doing the same thing with Bikes (a lot more $ involved for a container with say 6 or 7 bikes) one could take a REAL BATH on such a deal by the time shipping gets here and international exchange rates vary while they are on the ocean...

Just too fricken risky in this volatile world!

Shame coz theres some real nice Bikes that go cheap stateside that would probably sell well downunder.

Unlike the US cars - no need to convert bikes to RH drive for down under!

Pity really, I thought it was a real opportunity...

Just shows how quick things can change.

Another lesson learned the hard way!

If it was raining Phannys, I'd get hit by an asshole!.

Cheers & keep the pics coming - we can always dream!
