Humming Bird, Napa County, California. The wings are beating so fast that you can't see them with this shutter speed setting. For those who have never seen one, they hover in one spot momentarily and then suddenly dart off at high speed. Bob Fisher photo

Blonde story....
We have this purple flowering shrub/bush/thingo in the yard and the missus goes
"look at that tiny Humming Bird!!!" as there is a small animal hovering and eating the nectar....
So I looks over to watch the moth..... (its wings fold flat- moth!)
To be fair it did resemble a minature bird.
Sort of. :D

G'Day Barra,

It's easy to see how your missus mistook a Moth for a Hummingbird. I've done some research to help her distinguish between the two.

The image on the left is a Moth (I think), I get confused as they look very similar. However, I have found out that Moths are in fact an insect and belong to order Lepidoptera.

Hummingbirds are small birds on the other hand, and belong to the family Trochilidae, native only to the Americas.

If you look very closely there is a subtle difference. The easiest way to tell, for me anyway, is that the Moth doesn't have a beak - and the Hummingbird only has two legs...

A "Moth" (left) and a "Hummingbird" (right). They may look very similar to some but one is in fact an insect and the other is a bird.

My new book "MothingBirds of the World - for Blondes" has just been published and is now available for only $75.00. It would make a great birthday present for that special woman in your life!!!

Yes very helpful!
However when in flight it did resemble a very small bird, as it was a BIG moth. When its probiscus was extended its motion back and forth into the flower was reminiscent of a nectar eating bird....
I did not mention that there was no humming birds in Oz.
