A Gopher snake that I found while we were gardening. We put him in a bucket and moved him into a safer location upstream and away from our house... Bob Fisher

How do they rank on the "kill ya" scale?

"kill ya" scale

They rank very low - not poisonous - but colored like a rattler to discourage activities like those pictured!

Rattle Snakes

G'Day BoF

A little tail for you?

The missus is outside last night (about 9:00 pm), on the patio having a glass of wine and a smoke. She comes back inside and says: "Darl's can you put your thongs on, bring a torch and come outside?"

OK, so I'm lying already...

She's American and she actually said: "Honey, get your flip flops and a flashlight and get your fat, lazy ass out here!"

So's I goes outside and stands meself beside the patio table and chairs and she says "listen to that luv".

Next to the table, behind the potted plants comes the sound of a miniature mariachi...

I grab the torch and shine it back there...

That'd be a Rattle Snake, Darl's - I says....

That's what I thought Hon - she says...

OK, you get the bucket and I'll get the snake pole.

Better put some boots on luv, she says...

The snake pole is a broom stick with a coat hanger fashioned into a hook, attached to the end by Gaff tape...

You see, when I tell people at work who live in the suburbs, what we do up here in the woods, they freak out.

But I'm an Aussie - and I've been influenced by, Harry Butler (the pioneer of it all), the Barefoot Bushman, The Bush Tucker Man and Steve Irwin....

I've caught two rattlers and some other species up here before - and I don't kill them - I carry them up the road, glass of wine in one hand and a bucket in the other (I live in Napa, California's so called "Wine Country")... and getting back to the story, I release them on somebody else's property... just kidding - or am I?

Anywayz... this is a bloody long story...

So I tried to snare the snake and twist it around the hook on the end of the pole and I'm tired and I've just worked both days on the weekend followed by a 12 hour day and I've had a couple of glasses of wine and my reflexes aren't that good and the little bugger strikes at me first and then turns around and tries to take off through some metal railing. But the liitle woman is there waiting for it, in knee high grass and she holds it back with a car cleaning attachment on the end of an extendable aluminium pole.

Well in the end it slips past her and off into the grass, away from our house which is a pity coz I had a SportfishWorld Sweater on and she had the camera ready and I wanted to get you a pic...

She could have at least put her foot on it until I had gotten down there...

But really, she's a gutsy little sheila, my missus...
