Skipjack 24' - Trial Runs October/November 2007

Post by Bob Fisher » Sat Oct 27, 2007 9:35 pm

I've been way too busy lately but I just had to allocate some time to take the big boat down the river and see if I could sort it out.

Dion offered to follow me on his jet ski so that he could tow me back to the dock if I got into trouble...

The outdrive had been overhauled and it was running well in the driveway so I thought "Let's give it a go"

She took off from the ramp and got up on the plane easily...

Dion passed me on the jet ski and went up ahead....

I was cruising down the river and it felt really good, too good to be true...

And it was... I looked down at the temperature gauge and it was in the red. I shut her off and dropped the anchor...

Dion came alongside, tied up the jet ski and came onboard...

After the motor had cooled I headed back to the ramp slowly until it overheated again and then Dion towed me the rest of the way....

I'll see if I can find the problem tomorrow....

At anchor in the Napa River. I'll clean the boat when it's running properly!!! Gotta get the priorities straight!

Dion heading home from Cuttings Wharf through the vineyards. I guess this area would fall under the Carneros Appellation, not Napa Valley.

Skipjack 24' Project Boat V8 OMC Inboard Overheating

Post by Bob Fisher » Sat Nov 17, 2007 3:23 am

Continued from the previous post:

So I get home from the river and start her up in the driveway and she runs at like 150 degrees farenheit (180 is halfway...) which is great, so the following weekend I go down to the river AGAIN, this time with my neighbour and I gingerly cruise (idle) out from the dock. After a few moments the temp starts going off the gauge again (240!!!). I tie the boat up and let the motor cool down.

I wait about half an hour,

then I disconnect the input hose that goes thru the transom from the outdrive to the thermostat housing and briefly run the motor.

No water is coming in!!!

That's strange, I have a new water pump and a new impeller and it runs cool in the driveway?
:? :? :?

The answer is now apparent to me and pertains to (but is not caused by) the design that is specific to these particular OMC outdrives...

It is made more obvious in the attached photos... the second photo actually...

Very good Barra!!!
:o :o :o

That is correcto mundo!!!
:D :D :D

When the guys at the boat shop looked at it they found that their mechanic had put the impeller cover plate on back the front!!!

The old OMC has an optional upper-unit flush kit. The motor ran cool when the water was force fed into the block

When it was in the water however it was not pumping up from the NEW impeller and into the inlet hose!

The mechanic also made a fu fu when fixing the problem with reverse gear which blew again when they were testing the impeller...

They admitted full liabilty and repaired the whole outdrive at no cost to me which is VERY commendable these days!!!

Now it's onto the next problem...
